Second EV in Japanese giant's line-up is a compact crossover – and actually a rebadged Suzuki

Good
Sturdy-feeling build quality
Smooth regenerative braking
Strong warranty
Bad
Limited practicality
Uncompetitive efficiency
We've not seen a touchscreen this slow for a long time
Uncomfortable ride
Expensive next to rivals
Awkward driving position
Even though this new Urban Cruiser shares nothing with the one from 15 years ago, it seems destined to be similarly insignificant.
Wading into battle with a small interior, a poorly resolved ride, dated and slow infotainment, poor EV credentials and a price positioning that's looking pricier and pricier by the week, as more and more key rivals qualify for the UK's EV Grant subsidy, this car will face an uphill battle that it can’t win by just being a Toyota.
AutoExpress: 2,5 / 5
Pros
- Good standard safety kit
- Interesting sliding rear bench
- Solid performer in urban driving
Cons
- Dull to drive generally and not refined
- Average range and charging figures
- Cheap and awkward interior design
When it comes to an affordable electric crossover, we expected much more from Toyota. The new Urban Cruiser isn’t necessarily a bad car, it’s just unremarkable. We found it lacking personality, charm and a unique selling point that will allow it to triumph in the thunderdome that is the small electric SUV segment. Put simply, whatever it can do, most rivals can probably do better.
Customers expect more from Toyota, and rightfully so considering this car’s price point compared to its Suzuki e Vitara sister car. While the Suzuki has a bit more personality with the option of a dual-motor 4x4 system, the Urban Cruiser’s 2WD setup with average range and charging ability don’t help it stand out.
Toyota has added a small EV to its line up with a little help from Suzuki, but it’s not the most compelling choice

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is a decent electric car with a comfortable ride and good practicality. The problem is that it charges slowly compared with its rivals and it has no specific selling point that’d make it recommendable over rivals including the Kia EV3.
